The Big Agnes Big House 4 – the tent that rolls out the welcome mat.
Pro: You can stand up inside to get dressed
Con: Small rainfly vent can make air inside stuffy
Overall: A great car camping tent for 2-4 people
Anyone who loves to camp needs a good car camping tent, but finding the right combination of size, easy setup, quality, and price can be surprisingly challenging. On one end of the spectrum, you’ll find tents that look like they can sleep 20 people – but these are usually made of cheaper materials and construction, and anything that large will need a lot of poles (read: complicated) to set up. On the other end of the spectrum, you’ll find tents that look like they belong at Mt. Everest base camp, which means they’ll handle just about any kind of weather you can throw at them, but they will probably be out of most people’s price range.
Enter the Big Agnes Big House 4: a tent that gives you everything you want with a reasonable price tag. It’ll even roll out the welcome mat for you.
The Big Agnes Big House 4 can be easily set up by one person in less than 5 minutes. It has an intuitive color coded, 4-pole design (3 poles for the tent, 1 for the rainfly) that makes set-up a breeze even the first time. 6 guywires help keep the tent stable even in strong winds and the large rainfly keeps everything inside dry. The interior is tall enough (68”) that will allow most people to stand up inside and has 18 – yes 18! – interior pockets and that means that you’ll have plenty of places to stow your stuff. Two doors allow people to enter from both ends or lets you create a little breezeway to maximize airflow. If you’re feeling extra luxurious, the footprint is even large enough to set up a queen size air mattress, so you can camp in ultimate comfort
My favorite feature of the Big House 4 is the welcome mat – a little place to take off your boots/shoes to help keep the interior clean. This might seem like a silly feature, but anything that can help keep mud outside of a tent makes your camping experience much better.
The Big House 4 comes with a price tag of $330 that places it in the middle to middle-high price range for similar tents. But for a tent that can sleep 4 people and that you can stand up in, it’s one of the cheaper ones on the market. And best of all, it comes with Big Agnes quality, so you know you’ll be getting a durable tent that will last you for years of camping trips.
